Chicago September Governor William Spry, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Governor, My sister, who became aquainted with you during her travels west has told me if I appeal to you, directly, for the life of Mr. Joseph Hillstrom, condemned to die October 1st in your state, you will heed my request.
I am very much interested in the case, for I know Mr Hilstrom, and I know him as a gentle-hearted, wholesouled, kindly man. I cannot believe he has committed crime and especially the crime of taking a life.
I am not an I.W.W. nor a Socialist I am simply a young woman who knows very little of the Unions and the political classes. I know, though, that without the unions, your people, as well as mine would be greater victims of slavery in this country. I know, too, that politics rule the law; that a man in your positon, even be he the best the country can give us, both morally and humanly, often goes against his own beliefs and principals and allows a man to die unfjustly solely because he is ruled by his party. My sister

[left-hand page] tells me you are not such a man, you will stand by your honor and if there is a doubt of Mr. Hilstroms guilt you will brave your party, the whole State and the worlds if need be and save this man. But Governor, I am going to ask you something more than that, I am utter stranger to you, am going to ask you to save this man Even if you have not a doubt!
you have one of the greatest positions the county gives. You can say whether a man may live or die.
Just realize the enormity of your power! Realize the hearts you may gladden by saving a life.
Realize the years of peace you will know to be able to think "I save a man, I saved a life!"
On the other hand, if you allow this man to die, who will you be pleasing?
The ones you would please would not stand by you, they would know you for the cruel-hearted man you would be and in their heart of hearts would detest you. [/left-hand page]
[right-hand page] 3 You have the power! That's what the state ellecated your for, to deal out justice to the people. To use your own brain and your own consciance and your own honor to your conscinace! And now, dear Governor, show the people that you will do this. Show them you are governor! And a humane Govenor!! With many thanks I am, Sincerely Yours, Mrs. David Lipman 12 E. Eire Street Chicago Ill. [/right-hand page]
