had a long chat with him told him he would get troops home I got a certificate from him about having charge of troops. Called then at Capt. Eales gave him a Certificate in a rage at Wharton not bringing up a poney from Burmah for him. bid Capt. & Mrs. E good bye went to Cork's Saw a lot of Wharton's poneys some of the selling well went to Wilson's had tiffin with Wharton Called at Patersons office Capt. not there went on bd. a old ship of Some's called Mary Stuart Capt. & his wife on bd. left Wharton & walked up to my lodgings. played whist with Mrs. Philips Mrs. Campbell Miss Ogilvie, had a gB in my room at night with Philips Asked Wharton to dine with me tomorrow.

Tuesday March 15th. 1859
Wnt on bd. the "Ivanhoe" this morning Saw the Capt. promised to let me have £40- said I would see him at paterson's during the day. went on board the "Proserpine" breakfasted there with the Doctor Pyster Bowen & Dibbs bid them adieu. went on board the Huganout & another ship to look at the Cabins for Mrs. Walton went to my lodgings told Mrs. Walton of the Cabins. remained at home most of the day. Wharton came to dinner After dinner Capt. of Ivanhoe called met him upstairs with Wharton [Struck through: he gave me 100 rupee] [struck through: note went] told me to call at patersons & I would get 100 rupee note. went with Wharton to Patersons. Wharton advised

me to get bill for full amount Capt. not fond of giving perseved [persevered?] give me one on Condition of giving satisfaction. would not have given me another £30 for Medical Services &c went to the Exchange with Wharton drove home went & had tea bade Wharton good bye expecting he would soon follow to England had tea after got [struck through: a] parcels & letters from Mrs. Millers Sang a song or two with Miss Miller & Miss O An Old Scotsman sang a lot of Scotch songs. bid them all Goodbye. Gave Charley Philips my gun for 3 rupees.

Up before 6 went to China Choke to get some blankets & shoes with C Philip & William Ogilvie tried to get Change of a 100 rupee note

at Wilsons got some bac[c]y 3 rupees pound left a [struck through: late] 100 rupee note at Scott Thomsons with a note to Ferris to deduct what I had bought & 15 rupees got us this mg. from it & send a bill on to Kedgeree. Got a Gharrie at the house & went off on board the "Ivanhoe". C Philip with me breaking down ev[e]ry 5 minutes Philips left at Baboo Ghaut Got on board about nine get my Cabin & had traps put in met the other passengers at breakfast. Payne Ms. Payne Mrs. Richardson Mrs. Willis & 4 children Mr. Peterson pilot Mr. Jones. Leadsman Lane got under weigh about 10 slow work tides not suiting[?] very strong floods

During this time we had been working our way slowly out wards. took us four days down the river steamer left us at Saugor. been very comfortable on board teasing Lane the Leadsman & the little girls. Peterson & Lane good friends learning to play chess. Pilot left us two days ago. the last two days have been really calm. Played proverbs & Cross passport[?] Last evening till 10 oclock

Up before sunrise dead calm not more than than 100 yards below sandheads as yet Peterson & Capt. bathed on deck had great toothache & swelled face for two or three days steeped

port of the vessel pulled up to him dived also. went on board unsuccessful very light breeze today twelve ocl breeze freshened towards evg. 3 Knots Mr. P complaining turned in at 1/2 past 9. Slept in Cabin.
Saturday March 26th. 1859.
Up a little after 5. had a bath on deck. light breeze contg. 2 small vessels in sight on the horizon astern. reading Pickwick) wind fell light bz.[?] in the evening. Youngsters making great row on deck in the evg.
Sunday March 27th. 1859.
Up about 6 slept in Cabin last night. Cool. Peterson getting his arm pricked this mg. fine fresh breeze

Ivy[?] in the evg. fine breeze sprung up in the afternoon. 4 knots turned in at 1/2 past 9. Cabin very hot wine [wind] on the port quarter
Wednesday March 30/59.
Up a little after 5. had a batch. 3 buckets. a cheroot. (Hypo) reading Pickwick abroad. After Tiffin Catch Ivy played Chess & backgammon with Peterson this forenoon heavy squall in [Struck through: Thursd] the afternoon took us with everything set royal stun sails lay over to it but very stiff job getting youngsters of[f] the poop weather looked very threatening

went on deck about 1/2 past 5 had a bath. everything set looking black to windward & ahead. had only time to get sail in when the squall struck us

Sunday April 3rd. 1859
Rained & blew nearly all day Close hauled but laying nearly on counter. Ship more steady but very uncomfortable & warm. all stock turned out today & put in boatswains Cabin.

Up at 1/2 past 5 had a salt water bath. fell nearly calm this mg. very hot. expect to be in 6° to day sun nearly vertical playing sang with the passengers in the evg.
Tuesday April 5th. 1859
Blazing hot day no wind. bath this mg. Cf. Mate threw a bucket of water over me. Lat 6.41 Long 84.58. off Galle. reading Pickwick abroad sitting under the break of the poop. forfeits in the evg. earth air water

Wednesday April 6th. 1859
Up at 5.30. quite calm has been a very close & warm night slept on the bench in the cuddy Payne on the floor & Peterson on the other bench. Mrs. p & Mrs. W on the floor in the after Cabin. had a Couple buckets salt water a [?] & a cup of coffee without milk. Saw a large shark between 6 & 7 under the port Quarter. Could not get a hook to try to catch him. a light breeze came up about 8 ocl fair. 12 ocl. light wind Cont. very warm weather. reading Pickwick abroad. slept after tiffin long chat with Payne in the evg.
Thursday April 7th. 1859.
Up at 1/2 past 5 bath Coffee read Pickwick abroad Mg. not so hot as yesterday slept very cool

Up before 6 bath on deck. Ship still going along briskly as it has been doing for some days On Wednesday a very heavy Squall struck us. Careened us over tremendously Top gallant sails let go topsail halyards & close reefed them. lulled towards evening a good deal shook out the reefs & let top gallant sail in the evg. the sea is setting up from the SE today shewing we are not far from the SE Trades. the wind has been steadily from the Westward for a we [?] Lat today for about 7° South
