We had scarcely ever applied at the [[Post
Houses]] for accomodation, under-
standing that they received only such
as were travelling with [[Post Horses]],
but here they agreed to take us in ;
tho it being agovernment establish-
ment, they have no right to charge
for the use of the room, which is
free (to Posting travellers at least;)
perhaps they had no right to take
us in at all ; but we got the use of
a large tolerably clean room for
nothing their only charge being
what we eat + drank.
8th Passed through [Dorogbanji?] a
small poor town on the [[Dnieper]],
(which is here much smaller than
where we saw it before) + afterward
through a bleak country, dined at
a wretched filthy hut, where they
were busy preparing their cabbage
for being laid up as winter store.
In the evening arrived at a more
tolerable cottage which afforded at
least a decently clean table to sleep on.
9th Our road at first for a good
many versts through deep sand
progress very slow, but weather
beautiful , clear hard frost in the
morning - Country prettier + more
cheerful , through pine + birch wood
