offensive close heat which we had en-
dured the two previous nights. In
the morning we had passed the scene
of the battle of [[Borodino]]. Gjatsh
is said to be the only town which
which received nothing from the Emper-
as [[Empress]]to restore it, after the ravages of
1812.

6th Passed through a wooded coun-
try, ( prevailing wood birch) to
Viazma [[Vyazma]] a considerable town,
where we got tolerable accom=
modations. Houses here also lately
destroyed by fire.

7th Wettish day after heavy rain
the evening before, the roads
very heavy and progress slow. At
night we drove through a miser-
able enough village, not knowing
where we were to find quarters.
[Mr W?] - having preceeded us, sud=
denly turned up to a large house,
+ we following ; almost before we
knew what we were about found
ourselves among lofty spacious
rooms, all looked empty enough
indeed, few comfortless servants
going about _ Where can we have
got to? Ive found that this was
a [[Government Post House]].
