23rd We started at six in the morning
+ entered [[Prussia]] At [[Emmerich]] the
first Prussian Place we came to
there was a custom house search
made, which detained us some
time, the gentlemen made a run
into the town, while I tried to sketch
it from the boat. The country
continued flat + uninteresting, though
we saw rather more into it than when
enclosed by Dutch dykes, + there was
a slight appearance of rising ground
in the distance, the day was cold
+ unsettled with a good many snow
or hail showers. Every thing in
Prussia fills one with different
feelings from what they experience
in [[Holland]]; perhaps in passing through
any country, ones knowledge of the
history of its people gives a colouring
to the objects around us, so that one's
ideas of successful Dutch industry
