[sideways in the margin] Father and I attended Monthly concert. Sarah, Hannah & Samuel Wilde accompanied me home.
Saturday. May 1st. Rainy and yet there was a great deal of moving. I could not help itying those who were obliged to "turn out" on such a day.
Carrie and Marry Emma were neither of them so well as usual, Harriet was as busy as possible, and if hands had also not been full I would have found the day rather gloomy. As it was, it passed as quickly as most well employed days are apt to.
In the evening Albert brought home, "The Wide Wide World" and "Queechy" by Elisabeth Wetherell, they were a present to Mary Emma, she has read the first of the popular books and was anxious to have me do so immediately; but I chose to finish Numa Pompilius before commencing anything new. Accordingly I concluded it, and closed the book with the satisfactory feeling that I had been entertained and instructed at the same time. I then took up my pen. Retired about eleven.
Sunday. Pleasant. Morning at home. Mary Emma read aloud to Carrie most of the time. I employed the time mostly in reading to myself.
Attended S. School and Communion in the afternoon. Hugh Dickinson called to see Carrie and took tea with uis. All took a great fancy to him except the one in whose eyes he is most anxious to find favor. To Carrie's great amusement she was assailed on all sides, immediately after his departure, for the reason why she acted so. She laughed and obstinently declared that for all we had to say she was not in the least inclined to change
