He unty'd [untied] the Trunks in an Ins Instant
& hurry'd [hurried] them into the Dogana. The Viturino
more alarmed than we were ask'd [asked] if we
had any thing new or w'ch [which] we ought to be afraid of -
we told him not, & thought it would be as
well to let them examine every thing, rather
than to attempt to bribe them. We conjectured
they would only have their labour as a
Reward for their Pains, being determined
to give them nothing, because of the Trouble
& Delay they occasion'd [occasioned] - To our Surprize they
unpack'd [unpacked] every Bundle unwrapped the Smallest
Rolls we had; particularly the one who stopp'd [stopped]
the Chaise & examined [[Mr. Powels]] Trunk; Mine
tho' [though] [?] minute in his examination & seemingly
influenced by the other to leave nothing unvisited
& to put every thing to Confusion seem'd [seemed] more
compaisant - I therefore softened him
with the mild language - & appealed to two
Women who were present & seemed the wife
& Daughter of some of these People of the
Custom House. By this means - my watch w`ch
My Watch w'ch [which] I had put into the Trunk, a few Sulph'rs [Sulphurs]
from Rome, & 2 Sketches of a Portraits were all the
man laid his hand on - what I was more afraid
