[[Venice]] -

Lastly - they cover with a kind
of Lacker or Coat made of brick Dust
or different Earths, (as Fancy directs, & to
give the Col'r [Color] they like best) mixed up
with Linseed Oil - this is laid on the
10th part or perhaps an 8th part thick with
a brush like paint - & when dry is polished
with Linseed Oil & a rubber -

The Advantages of this are
amongst others - Durability; & ye [the] ^ it is not of
liable to fire - If the upper story burns
& the fire falls on this it does not com-
communicate to the under stories -

These Pavements or floor are cleaned with
Linseed Oil & a rubber 3 or 4 times a
year, are smooth like a mirror, yet
from habit, Children learn to walk
on them with the same security as
on a board floor - they seem to
me to be pleasanter than a board
floor both in Summer & Winter -

This Acc't [Account] I got from Consul Martens
