+ The Manner of making th'r [their] floors at
Venice is first on the Joists to lay board [?]
a kind of Case like window [?] a chequer board
so [?] as ye [the] following figure -

The
Black part is the Where the Joice
lay w'ch [which] have their edges lin'd with the so
ribs of the squares so that you dont see
where the Planks touch them - The Planks
are of a great thickness as an Inch & a half
or two Inches - These are covered with
a Composition of Mortar brick dust & various
pieces of Marble the splinters w'ch [which] flye off
when the Statuarys work their marble w'ch [which]
makes all bind fast, & gives a pretty appear'ce [appearance] -
When this is laid on 4 or 5 inches thick
or more; there are a great Number of Men
employ'd [employed] to beat it hard firm & smooth
with Irons w'ch [which] have the under surface flat
& smooth; they stand so near one anoth'r [another]
& th'r [their] Irons are so large that when they
all fall together they cover the whole floor
otherwise the Mortar would fly up
between the Irons; & they are so
trained as to beat all in Time, not
one sooner or later than another - they
do this for many Hours for many Days togeth'r [together]
perhaps ten or twelve - Then
