[[Venice]]

Friday July 26

P Left Padua and at 4 OClock
in the Morning; came went in a Chaise abt. [about] 10 or
11 Mile - then in a Go^ndola to [[Venice]], w'ch [which]
is distant from [[Pauda]] 26 Miles - The
Road & Country as we approach'd nearer to
the Sea more & more pleasant, with a
great Number of Houses on each Side of
the River, like Villages or Small Towns -
with fine elegant Country Seats here
& there situated pleasantly in View of
the Water -

[[Venice]] as we Saw it at about
five miles distance nearly from ye [the] Shore, at
where ye [the] River empties itself into the Sea -
has a most Striking Effect to those who never
before saw any thing of the kind - A City
rising out of the waves of the Sea, so large
& so handsome as Venice is indeed a
beautifull object - The small Islands
w'ch [which] surround great part of it, at some
miles distance from each other have
also a very pleasant appearance
