In this Cabinet he had a Series of
the Portraits of Old Anatomists at [?] his famous
Predecessors at [[Bologna]], in w'ch [which] he pointed
out a particularity with regard to their
dress - the necks of the first being covered
in a kind of Caul - like a Monks Hood -
this gradually lessened & a fit lining
taking place, but ye [the] neck left covered
up till at length they came to wear
bands w'ch [which] at first were small & gradually
enlarg'd [enlarged] to ye [the] greatest Size -
In this Cabinet was ye [the] Portraits - ie ye [the]
Heads of two beautifull girls done by
Rosalba in crayons - I ask'd [asked] whose
were these - & he told me as follows -
that he have had 15 Children of whom remain
2 Sons & 8 Daughters - that ye [the] Daughters
every one as they grew up requested to become
Nuns, w'ch [which] he esteem'd [esteemed] very singular, & that
they entered by pains into 4 different Convents -
when their time of probation was expired, they
were at their own Choice to live in ye [the] World
or take ye [the] Veil w'ch [which] last they all preferred - the
two youngest going into ye [the] first order of franciscans
where they go bare footed & allways veiled - Before
these were shut up thus for Life - ye [the] celebrate'd [celebrated] female Paintress
