Art 39th - The Centries at the gates of the Fort are not on any account any European Soldiers or Sailors without an order from the Officer of the Guard, thro' the sergeant who on his part is to be answerable that no soldier with or without regimentals be allowed to pass out of the Fort, unless he has a Chit signed by the Officer of his Corps & then the Sergeant is to send a Naigue or Sepoy of his Guard to pass beyond the Barrier, & the centry, posted there as well as the one at the Ravelin is to stop any European, altho' he may have a Chit, who is not conducted out in this [...] manner. The Sergeants of the Port guards are to stop & examine every European in a Sailor's [...] dress, who wants to pass out after retraite Beating, & if they find any who cannot give a satisfactory
