[Wednseday 10 January 1951]

Providence and Hanover

Up at 7:40 left hotel at 9:10. Maid 1.00 Jofe paid bell boy + taxi and porter. At Boston we had lunch Jofe paid. I bot a book 1.00, tips in Hanover 1.00 train porter .50 Times article re Richmond

Franz and I rehearsed at Bartlett music school building from 4:45 to 5:50 I returned to Hanover Inn and I had a delicious dinner in my room at 7. Sheraton Biltmore #1109-11

Franz and Jofe came in at 9 and stayed until eleven discussing the world situation and the U.N.

I retired at

Called Freibe and received call from Emily in Chicago.

[Thursday 11 January 1951]

Dartmouth College - Hanover N.Y.

Up at 9:30 bathed and dressed called Philadelphia, went to lunch at 12:15 and rehearsal at 3:15. Had soup and Melba toast and left at 8:15 for concert. Last part better than the first.

Afterwards we went to the home of Professors and Mrs who prepared a nice snack for us and we stayed there until midnight.

I retired at 1 +

[Friday 12 January 1951]

Up at 8:30 after a wretched night of pains in the bottom of my stomach. Went to Webster Hall at 10:15 for rehearsal with Franz.

Bot batteries .25 and returned to the Inn for interview and luncheon with Prof + Mrs Silverman. Boy .50 Mr Bentley came at 2:30 and drove us Jofe + me to White River for the Boston train. Hotel bill by check 33.52 Arrived, Boston at 6:30 pullman porter .50 and hotel Tensgate bell boy .65 had dinner in room (tip 50) tho invited to have it in the dining room. Jofe + I went to the Sadler's Wells ballet and saw Mr Hurok.

He got back about 11:30 and I retired at 1

[Saturday 13 January 1951]

Up at 10 bathed and did some laundry. Called Mr Crawford's office, Freibe and Mae also talked with Prude re Richmond. Sent wires to Emily + Pres Ellison Jofe and I went to lunch at the Union Lobster House, and afterwards went hat hunting to the tune of 22.90 check and stockings 3.30 We walked back to the hotel + listened to Il Trovatore. Received camelias from the Richmonds, had dinner in my room .50 tip then went to the ballet which was magnificent.

Had gingerale at hotel bot paper + sent night letter tip + paper .40

Retired at 1 A.M.

Expenditures 4.20 misc. 22.90 hats 3.30 stockings 26.20

[Sunday 14 January 1951]

Boston

Up at 8:40 bathed had breakfast at 9:30 tip .35, packed, Jofe came + we checked out of Fensgate Hotel at 1 P.M. maid 1.00 porter, cab to hall, rehearsal with Franz then the concert. Wonderful audience + flowers. So many people back stage Dressed in artist's room went to station had a bite there, then boarded train at 7:05, got out at Bridgeport. (bad weather) Freibe, had sent message to train, + was waiting there at 10:23 + drove home. New T.V.

Retired at 1
