Gentlemen:

Although totally out of sympathy with Mr.Pegler's recent article on Mrs.Roosevelt's resignation from D A R, I am constrained to write you on one aspect only of that article- Marian Anderson

Mr.Pegler said, in substance - his article is not before me- that Mrs.Roosevelt's action made "famous" an otherwise " obscure singer". I can account for such a statement only upon the basis that, in Mr.Pegler's mind, every singer is obscure. For as a singer Marian Anderson is herself. Marian Anderson is, of course, famous internationally. She might well claim, for she has been pronounced by those who should know, to have the greatest voice in the world today.

To consider Marian Anderson along with the negro cotton picker is not so far from classifying Lincoln with the rail splitters of his day.

One of my greatest joys is the memory that I participated in this presentation of Marian Anderson to her first white audience, which was many years ago in Winnetka.

Very truly yours,

cc Mr. Westbrook Pegler and Marian Anderson Genevieve Whitman
