Gladys Swarthout Metropolitan Opera House New York City

Mr. S Hurok March 1 1939

It is unfortunate that in these times when racial discrimination is particularly abhorrent to all democratic nations that an organization which owes its origin to the creators of our liberty should see fit to close its doors in the face of an American artist who is welcomed with acclaim in every concert hall in Europe.

No matter what necessity prompted the D.A.R. [DAR] to formulate a rule barring negroes from Constitution Hall surely the conditions in the world today must obviously require a waiving of that rule in the case of Marian Anderson, not only because she is one of the world's great artists, but because she is a distinguished American citizen.
