12:30 -- same weather & cold -- Sent a very strong 2 page letter to Vardy of the Wells Herald tonight, calling him down on his neglect or refusal to pay me --

Same -- Only about two inches of snow is the accumulation the last day or two -- Reported as usual -- Sent short letter to Tribune in response to one received from the Managing Editor William Nelson, dated Jan 31 -- also his telegram of yesterday -- Also gave a few items, etc -- Evening about town -- very slippery & cold -- Tim Dempsey sold out his saloon this PM to Dick Kirman -- Evening I went with him on visit to his family -- His daughter Nellie on piano and Pearlie on violin entertained me very

Same -- infernal weather -- I got onto that new Nevada RR proposition for Lincoln County -- Incorporation papers filed yesterday PM with Secy of State -- I found it & sent synopsis of it to Tribune, and also to SF Chronicle & the Reno Journal -- 2 pages to each -- 400 words each -- Gave

Variable & very cold -- This PM & evening I wrote a 4 page letter to J P Jones, Washington DC -- too late for mail -- telegram over the wires here says big fight between Americans & Filipinos, at Manila -- 2 Ams killed & 100 wounded -- First fight with them -- J F Augell, Silver City died Friday aged 75 -- Mrs Botkin was sentenced at SF yesterday to State Prison for life --

Monday Feb 6

Clear, fine & cold -- 8° below zero early this morning -- coldest of the winter thus far in Carson -- Jacob Klein one of the oldest & best known & influential citizens of Carson died at SF last evening of stomach & heart troubles -- Been there sick several weeks -- quite wealthy -- Firm of Wagner & Klein, Carson Brewery for years back, but owned whole business latterly -- About 65 yrs old -- Very benevolent & many a poor family as well as business man will miss Jake Klein more than anybody -- I received 2 checks from SF Chronicle -- one for $50 and other for $20 --

Mollie Adelia Brown fine soprana, from New York -- Miss G Fugel Crist pianist, and Russell H Ballard, Cellist -- All fine -- too fine -- Miss Brown sang operatic and domestic airs -- splendid voice -- others instrumental solos & duets etc -- Slim house -- Have heard better, etc but this very good -- Bed 12 --

Clear fine & warmer by 20° -- Flags flying at 1/2 mast in token of death of Jake Klein -- The Journal said this morning that my report was not received last evening -- I went on track of it -- Found it left here on the evening train, sure. Fault must lay in the Reno P.O. First time I ever had one of my regular reports miss -- Prof Ring told me at noon that Mother

Stoddard was very sick, & wife was up night and day attending her -- Wrote & sent wife a 2 page letter tonight -- Latest news says in the fighting at Manila thus far 50 Americans killed and 4000 of the Filipinos -- The SF Chronicle of Sunday had my new railroad item I sent them in it -- Bed 12 -- 22 below zero at Elko yesterday morning --

Wednesday Feb 8

Clear & springlike -- Reported as usual -- easy day -- The Salt Lake Tribune of Monday I got hold of today, had my Lincoln County railroad item in great shape, having evidently delayed a day to get in a wood cut illustration or diagram, together with much of their own talk on the subject -- Made over a double column of the matter -- Latest news from Manila is that the killed, wounded and prisoners Filipinos amounted to about 10,000 & we didn't lose 100 killed -- Slaughtered the poor devils -- did as we pleased -- Made 5,000 prisoners -- I find that the cause of my Monday report not connecting was because the Journal office man didnt wait long enough in the postoffice for the mail to be distributed -- got away too soon, leaving my letter -- Bed 12 -- Sent my razor this evening mail to Will & Finck San F, to be put in order -- Sent 50 cts postage to pay first -- played a game of whist for 1st time, this evening with

Thursday Feb 9

Same -- Both houses of the Legislature held AM & PM sessions & adjourned till Monday, in order to visit Reno & the State institutions tomorrow -- by invitation for inspection etc -- Letter from wife says mother has a paralytic stroke of half her body & may not live more than a day or two, etc -- I wrote her a reply this evening & sent it -- Also sent letter to Judge Wm Webster of the Reno Journal, explaining that it was the fault of his office that my report of the Legislature failed to be received last Monday evening, by the Journal man not taking it from the Post office when the mail was distributed -- Also sent regular report as usual -- Bed 12 --

Same -- Mother Stoddard's sickness in the Reno Journal this morning -- PM I wrote & sent 3 page letter about 650 words, to Tribune -- Evening wrote similar one & mailed it for tomorrow to the Chronicle dated 11th -- Bought me a new dark brown hat at Abe Cohn's for $2 -- Worked late in State House on my Chronicle letter -- till 11 oclock 3 1/2 pages, about 700 words -- Bed 12 --
