Friday, A "Shout" 1862
on Mr. Gabriel Capier's plantation a
woman brought from Africa, whose
face was atattoed. She looked to be
of more vigorous stock than these.
I find most of the negroes
I have seen very weak & decided-
ly unhealthy - bad teeth &c. What
else could be expected on hominy
& prok from generations to generations
& with such houses & such work.
The fleas are awful beyond des-
cription I have just been to our
quarters to doctor old Phyllis & Lucy
and I am in torment.
Last night I was at the "Praise
House" for a little time & saw Miss
Nelly reading to the good women.
Afterwards we went to the Shout
a savage heathenish dance out
in Riva's house. Three men stood &
sang, clapping & gesticulating. The others
shuffled along on their heels following me
