MONDAY, Theft 1862

Monday April 28th

Mrs. Walker & I are at [sword's?]
[points?]. She said one day in the
cotton house that some clothing had
been taken "I'm almost glad of it."
I exclaimed thoughtlessly. Yesterday
she said more had gone and told
Mr. P privately that she knew one
person who would be glad the theft
occurred. The cotton house she says
was broken open & the goods disarranged
& stolen. So last night they had a sol.
dier sleep there - a young man,
easy going, whom I hated to leave
alone there in danger & so lonely
locked in. We went with him so that
his going might not be noticed by
the soldiers. Mr. Pierce, Miss Walker
& I. This morning early he went
away. I do not believe anybody
ever entered the house at all. It
is only Miss W's suspicion and
