The same hour one third of the class chooses the extended course the other two thirds might for convinience be subdivided into two sections. Now as there are thirteen Mathematical recitations a week at present this tripartite division of the class would present thrirty duties a week which is thirteen a piece for three teachers provided that no two classes are reciting mathematics at the same hour and all of a class is reciting mathematics at the Same time At present forty two hours of work are devoted to the attainment of the object i have in view to two lesson by an instructor would be the same during a week This fact may seem to mostly increase the labour of the teachers. But while Mathematical pursuits are to [illegible] yet the teaching Mathematics is rather a matter of routine requiring a good deal of hard work to be done but it is pretty much the same for one class that it is for another. This tripartite division I would ex-tend to the Freshman class although its studies are pursued by all without election. The extended course might be under the care of the Professor of Mathematics if he prefer to have it as would the general oversight and responsibility of the courses in all the classes(such oversight as is to be exercised in the choice of text books the parts in each book to be read). Buti would have him take charge of a portion of the Freshman class also for I think now as I long have thought that the best and most experienced teachers in the University ought to be devoted to the Freshman class. When the division into sections takes place the beginning of the sophomore for each teacher might take and keep [illegible] responsible for his own sections throughout the course. And this arrangement might be affected in the Freshman class also.

Perhaps the teachers of the other Departments in the Uni-versity might find some features of this plan applicable to their own studies. If adopted in whole or in part for the mathematical department it will not interfere with the operations of the others.
