Sir,
I have to acknowledge the
receipt of your letter of the 17th [illegible]
covering a commission appointing me an
attorney for the trustees of the University.

I have to regret that I am compelled
to decline the appointment. My private
pursuits are already too numerous, and I
am under some professional engagements
which forbid an acceptance of the appoint
-ment -

The Papers enclosed in your letter
will be returned, if wanted.
