Deed Oct. 16 1793 Commm to George Johnston Plater 1 lot 2 acres on Franklin St. & numbered eleven in plan of said town - 71 pounds-

All deeds witnessed by W. Walter & [??] at [??] 1794, & at [??] 1794.

The name James Patterson in written [??] in [??] every place.

Halifax (N.C.) October 30 1793

On the 12 inst the Commissioners appointed by the Board of Trustees of the University of this state met at Chapel Hill for the purpose of laying the cornerstone of the present building and disposing of the lots in the village. A large number of the brethern of the Masonic order from Hillsborough, Chatham, Granville & Warren attended to assist at the ceremony of placing the cornerstone; & the procession for this purpose moved from Mr. Patterson's at 12o'clock in the following order. The Masonic brethern in their usual order of procession, the commissioners, the trustees, not commisioners, the Hon. Judge Macay & other public officers, then the Masons opened to the right and left and the commissioners &c passed through & took their places. The Masonic procession then moved on around the foundation of the building & halted with their usual ceremonies opposite the south east corner where Wm Richardson Davie, Grand Master of the Fraternity & in this State, assisted by two master of lodges, & four other officers laid the corner stone enclosing the plate to commemorate the transaction.

The Rev D.r McCorkle then addressed the trustees & spectators ....

The discourse was followed by a short ... prayer closed with the united answer of an immense concourse of people.

The commissioners then proceeded to sell the lots in the village, & we have the [illegilble struck through text] pleasure to assure the public that although there were but 29 lots, they sold for upward of one thousand , five hundred pounds ...

This building is to be of the following dimensions & executed according to the inclosed plan & as hereby described. The building is to be (96) ninety-six et (7) inches in length (400 forty feet one inch & a half in width. Two storys in height ... The foundation to be ladi with stone up to the surface of the ground, from the surface of the [illegilbe struck through text] earth to the top of the first floor to be two feet four inches laid with bricks two & a half feet thrick - the [illegible struck through text] outside walls to be two bricks thick up to the second floor ... specifications Manuscript specification of Mr. Patterson's contractor for the building. Dated July 19, 1793.
