224209 John Motley Morehead, Honorary member Messages were received from the following members expressing regrets and stating reasons for their inability to be present: New Members of the Board Governor Sanford welcomed the new members, and he made the following statement to them: "I want to say to you that you come, as you know, to a trusteeship that has a long and rich tradition. It's one of the most important assignments in the entire state. You have a great responsibility for exercising mature judgment and working hard at the task of leading higher education in this state, and we look forward to this association. I am delighted to welcome all of you here to the Board. You will shortly receive committee assignments, and we expect you to work at this job. In fact, the University and education generally could not move forward if the Trustees did not work at it. So, it is a working job and we will pass out the assignments very soon, and we look forward to the many things that your presence will add in so many ways. I think the Trustees have demonstrated over the years that they have the kind of leadership that North Carolina needs. I am satisfied, looking over the list, that we can take pride in the election of the new members that this tradition will be carried on and strengthened." Minutes The minutes of the last meeting were approved without reading, a copy having been mailed to each member of the Board. Retiring Facuity President Friday was recognized, and he referred to the practice which has been in effect for several years of inviting retiring faculty members to attend the Commencement meeting of the Board and the luncheon.
