The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of North
Carolina met in Special Session at 9:30 o' clock, Monday morning, May 28, 1956,
in the Faculty Lounge of the Morehead Building on the campus at Chapel Hill,
Governor Luther H. Hodges presiding, Arch T. Allen, Secretary. The following
members were present: Mrs. A. H. Lathrop, Mr. John W. Clark, Mr. T. J. Pearsall,
Mr. Rudolph I. Mintz, Mr. Reid A. Maynard, Mr, John W. Umstead, Mr. George Watts,
Mr. Victor S. Bryant, Mr. Wade Barber and Mr. W. Frank Taylor. Messages of
regret for their inability to be present were received from Judge John J. Barker
and Mrs. May L. Tomlinson. Acting President Friday, Vice President & Finance
Officer Carmichael, Provost Whyburn, Chancellors House, Bostian and Graham were
present.

CHANCELLORS' REPORTS
The Governor recognized Acting President Friday who called on Chancellor
House for presentation of his report which was as follows:

Chapel Hill:

Appointments:

Walter R. Benson, as Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, School of
Medicine; salary $6800, beginning July 1, 1956. Born July 27, 1920, Tamaqua,
Pennsylvania, married, 2 children. M. D. Duke University 1944.

Resignations:

Joseph Fremont Burket, Associate Professor, Department of Pedodontics,
School of Medicine, resigns as of August 31, 1956, to return to private practice
in Kansas.

Duff Browne, Director of Television, resigns as of July 15, to accept the General
Managership of the new community education television station at New Orleans.

Morris S. Davis, Assistant Professor of Astronomy, Department of Physics,
resigns as of August 31, to accept a post as Research Associate in the Department
of Astronomy at Yale University.

John T. O'Neill, Professor, School of Business Administration, resigns as of
August 31, to accept a post as Associate Professor at Northwestern University.

Thomas M. Stanback, Jr., Assistant Professor of Economics, resigns as of
August 31, to accept a position at New York University.

On motion of Mr. Umstead, duly seconded, the report and recommendations of
Chancellor House were unanimously approved.
