Rutherfordton June 17th. 1839.

Mother,

When I last saw you I expected to return my visit in one, or two, years at furthest. But it is impossible to anticipate, with any accuracy, future events. Since that period, I have experienced scenes of almost every character - some of prosperity, and some the reverse -- a portion hapily, and a large portion miserably. These are matters over which we can have but little control - They, for the most part, transpire according to Divine well & pleasure. Yet many of our misfortunes proceed from our now imprudent and misguided actions -- from a carelessness, and negligence of conduct, entirely within the scope of our own control.

When troubles of this kind befall me, I am grant to acknowledge my error; but when those, which cannot be averted, come across me, I am at a loss how to reconcile them.

I will cease philosophising on this subject, as it is one of too much magnitude - Suffice it to say that all things must terminate in accordence with Divine pleasure -- or in other words agreeably to Divine purpose -- though this is a question irreconcilable to many.
