men and women. They "see nothing in farming", they say, and so are restless
to get out and try a better standard of living. The Emersons, like all
the rest, would like to keep them at home, but bow to the inevitable.

[struck out: Every so often] Emerson frequently hears the bugles of battle calling and is wild to answer;
but though the spirit is willing the flesh is no longer strong enough
to carry on as of old. And so the Andrew Jackson of southern Labor goes
back to the field instead of the forum and battle line.
