23 September 1996 Ms. Terry Gips, Director The Art Gallery University of Maryland Campus Dear Terry: I met with Juanita last week and we had a good talk about the exhibition. She will be finished with her dissertation defense this week after which I am certain that we will be able to get together for a meeting. I know that you need word from the Dean's office as to what kind of help will be coming your way. Greg came by today to do additional photography of some pieces that may be included in the packet you send out to venues in the future. Since i have provided the money for Greg's work, S do not necessarily envision this work to be the final photography for the catalogue. It is my understanding that funds will be allocated in the projected budget for that purpose. I had a good visit in my studio in Maine in August with two curators from the Portland Museum of Art. They noted that they would be presenting the idea to their exhibition committee in September. I would appreciate knowing what museums have expressed interest in the exhibition at this time. We do not anticipate having the works out for more than a year or thereabouts after the show leaves Maryland. At any rate, I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, c: Juanita Holland David C. Driskell

24 September 1996

Ms. Terry Gips, Director The Art Gallery University of Maryland Campus

Dear Terry: These are the people who should be invited to serve on the Advisory Board for the Exhibition Project/Center concept. I have already spoken to Daphne, Sandra, Sharon, John and Katherine. But all should be sent a formal letter requesting their service. Perhaps they should all be sent the appropriate draft for the project (pp 1-13) or revised version thereof of August 15,1996.

Sincerely

David C. Driskell

THE ART GALLERY UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AT COLLEGE PARK 27 September 1996

Dear David: Thanks for the very nice letter, and the list for the Advisory Board. I heard news today that Juanita had passed one hurdle in her defense. We are all eager to welcome home a finalized Ph.D! I saw Juanita Wednesday and she told me with great excitement of all the new items she has been going through in your collection. She said it will be extremely hard deciding what to leave out! But a “working” checklist is all we need right now. And yes, more photographs will be very, very useful. The Gallery will cover the costs of getting some duplicates made (as we do in developing all exhibitions), to send to prospective venues. I hope that the three of us can meet next week. Juanita and I think Wednesday might work. My morning seems open right now. Thursday and Friday are also possible. We should make a calendar for traveling venues, and go over the list of prospective museums. I have made NO promises, NO commitments; however, I have agreed to forward a checklist and to talk with them by the end of the month regarding our expected traveling calendar. So... we’re a bit late. It’s ok. To reiterate the contacts from museums: / REALLY interested: Portland Museum of Art,/Baxter Gallery,\Colby College Museum, California Afr-American Museum, Newark Museum * QUITE interested: Elvehjem Museum, U. Wisconsin-Madison; Georgia Museum of Art,-Athens, H ■ GA; Albany Museum of Art-Albany, GA No MAYBE interested: Cheekwood- Nashville, Palmer Museum of Art—Penn State Taj TeirfvA Have not heard from High Museum of Art-Atlanta or Birmingham Museum of Art—two places we talked about as potential sites of interest to us. Juanita had also mentioned her interest in the New Museum in NYC. We did not mail a prospectus to them this summer (or to numerous other Another issue which is still unresolved is staff support for this project. As you know, I am particularly concerned with getting highly qualified, ongoing staff help for the production of the catalogue in particular, as well as the oversight of the traveling aspects of the show. Of course, if these tasks can be overseen by others outside of the Gallery, that is an option. I have yet to hear from the Dean’s office regarding the solution to this staffing situation. Look forward to meeting with you next week. College Park, Maryland 20742 Telephone / 301 / 405-2763 Art-Sociology Building cc. Juanita

Greg Staley

Dear Greg:

I hope you have received the de Looper catalogues. I’m now writing about the Driskell project. We are ready to do more photographs, and Juanita has asked me to reassure you about getting paid promptly. The account for the Driskell project is now being administered through the Gallery office. We make every effort to process invoices as soon as they come in, and thus to pay contracts within 3 to 5 weeks.

You should continue to make specific arrangements with Juanita, David, and Adrienne, but submit your invoice to Rob Blitz.

I look forward to working with you in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Terry Gips Director

THE ART GALLERY UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College Park / Maryland / 20742 21 November 96 Dear Juanita, David, Keith, Stephanie, Margo, Carla, Barry, Elaine !_ See pp. 6-7 We (the Gallery and CRBS) are aware that we are getting ahead of ourselves. But such is the nature of writing ugrants under pressure. We’ve included you in our plans for events proposed for the Spring 98 semester when The Art Gallery will be presenting the important exhibition of David Driskell’s collection of art. You can read the full prospectus which is attached to learn all about this. But first, look for the bright blue stars which indicate your role. We think/hope that the small (but important) presentation we’ve lined up for you is something you would like to do. If you have a 10-month UMCP contract, we’ve budgeted a small stipend. If you have a 12-month contract, we’ve budgeted your participation as in-kind. I’m getting this text into your mailbox, but you should call/email Adele Seeff if you have questions. She will, in fact, be trying to reach you simultaneously. Regards, Terry Terry Gips Director

MD Humanities Council David - Can you fax a brief note of support to Adele Seeff re: the attached proposal/request to MDHC 301-405-0956 by Monday? Nov. 25.
