THE ART GALLERY UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AT COLLEGE PARK

20 August 1996

Prof. Juanita Holland

Dear Juanita:

I am writing to update you on the status of Gallery work on the David C. Driskell exhibition project. I met with Keith Morrison on Monday, August 19, to discuss several issues related to the Gallery, including the need for staff support for the Driskell project. I have requested that a graduate assistant be assigned to the Gallery and dedicated to this project for the next 18 months. His/her responsibilities would include coordination of fundraising and grantwriting; scheduling of traveling venues; oversight of production and distribution of the catalogue; and administrative liaison for all the campus participants in this project, including the scheduling of meetings, etc. Such staff continuity seems essential in light of my upcoming sabbatical in 1997.

I believe that Keith understands the magnitude of this project and will support it in every way he can. He will be conferring with Michele Eastman when she returns from vacation about my request. As I discussed with you last week, Gallery work on this project will be put on hold until we get further assistance. The demands of exhibitions and publications occurring this fall and in 1997 must take priority. Michelle Kloss passed on all the materials she has assembled when she left on the 16th. Everything is in good order, and I am eager to return to work on this project as soon as possible.

Sincerely, Terry Terry Gips Director

David C. Driskell

Dear David:

I thought it would be useful to provide you with a brief summary of what’s been accomplished over the summer in relation to the 1998 exhibition of your collection and work. I’m sure you will have much mail on your desk when you arrive back from Maine, so I will keep this to the essentials.

1. Michelle Kloss, the art history grad student working with me this summer, completed a great deal of work and left for her fall teaching obligation on August 16. I have asked the Dean for additional graduate student assistance to oversee the year-long work on the production of the catalogue and the traveling of the exhibition. Michele Eastman contacted me and suggested a meeting with her, you, Juanita, and myself to clarify tasks and staffing. I believe Michele will be setting up that meeting.

2. A revised prospectus and budget have been prepared. Copies are enclosed.

3. We have received phone calls and/or letters from the following museums expressing serious interest in hosting the exhibition: Newark Museum; Portland Museum of Art; Baxter Gallery, Maine College of Art; Albany Museum of Art, Albany, GA; Elvehjem Museum of Art, U. of Wisconsin, Madison; California Afro-American Museum, L.A.; Georgia Museum of Art, Athens; Colby College Museum of Art.

We also had a “maybe” response from Rusty Freeman at Cheekwood; they are undergoing renovations, so he wasn’t sure. And we got a letter from Kevin Grogan at Fisk who declined because of lack of space—just as you indicated would happen.

We will need to provide working checklists to potential venues in September, and develop a schedule, including the length of time you and your family are willing to loan the artworks. Museums are booking for 98 and 99 right now, so we will need to move on this fairly quickly. We need to communicate with those to whom we will NOT be able to send the show, too. The following is a tentative schedule for us to think about: 1. February-April 1998 The Art Gallery at UMCP 2. June - July 1998 3. September - October 1998 4. December - February 1998-99 5. April - May 1999 6. July - August 1999 7. October - November 1999

4. We’ve identified a number of potential sources of funding and efforts are underway on several of them. Gail Thacher and Martina Grunwald will be meeting with NYC-based foundations and corporations in September.

5. I’ve asked Rob Blitz from the Gallery office to chair a planning group to explore the possibility of producing an interactive CD ROM publication to accompany the catalogue and to stand alone as a research and educational tool. I need your input on this, David. Do you like the idea? Reservations and conditions? I understand that some of your collection is already being scanned?

6. We’ve floated a number of ideas about campus, K-12, and public programs such as lectures, films, courses and seminars, etc. These will be developed in detail during the coming months.

7. Catalogue publisher and distributor. We need to explore possibilities of co-publishing or contracting with a distributor. Specifically, I’d like to know what you think about making an inquiry with Smithsonian Institution Press.

Sincerely,

Terry

THE ART GALLERY ? UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AT COLLEGE PARK 12 September 1996 MEMORANDUM TO: Juanita Holland, David Driskell FR: Terry Gips RE: Driskell Exhibition Progress

In these busy first two weeks of the semester, I’ve had a chance to informally talk with you both about the need to produce a working checklist of the 1998 exhibition and to outline a schedule for the traveling venues. We have several museums who are very eager to receive the checklist and to confirm their commitments to host the exhibition. I have told them that they would hear from us during September.

Juanita, could I ask you to set up a meeting for the three of us (and Adrienne Childs if you like) to work on these two matters? As you know, I have not had any staff assistance for this project since the middle of August, and therefore am not able to do any substantial work on it. In fact, even routine tasks have been delayed because an undergraduate intern who had committed to work at the Gallery this fall had to change her plans. I understand that Michele Eastman is addressing the staffing issue.

In the meantime, it would be very unfortunate to lose the venues for the exhibition--something that could happen if we are not able to provide the information the museums need in order to get decisions from their committees and boards.

I look forward to hearing from you.
