of the State of Tennessee
The petition of Joseph Love Deputy Sheriff
of Knox County Humbley Shewitt that
your petitioner at the time that Joseph
Ravenhill was killed by Stephen Duncan
and others, had the care of the jail for
Hamilton district, and the insufficiency
there of put him under the necessity
of calling on the militia or hereing
a Guard at his own expense to keep said
prisoners safe for Trial, he therefore
hired two men of integrity for that duty
at twenty dollars cash per month from the
twenty seventh day of July to the twenty first
day of October 1808 - Your petitioner
prays your honourable body to take his
care into consideration and grant him
such relief as you in your wisdom may
think right; and your petitioner
will ever pray.
