Although very difficult to tell from his poor handwriting, this letter is signed by Dr. James Van Zandt Blaney ["Jms V.Z.Blaney - " on the signature, and "JV.Z.B." at the bottom of the letter]. He was on the faculty of Rush Medical College, later at Northwestern University, and was also co-founder and first President of the Chicago Academy of Sciences.
