Great Valley N. Y. Feb 22d 1859
Mr. John A. Kennicott
Dear Sir
Yours of the 12th is at hand.
We are well acquainted with you by reputation [2 words underlnd]
& would ask no reference.
We feel confident that we can deal with you in a man-
ner that will be entirely satisfactory altho' our stock of salable
trees is not yet large, we are enlarging as fast as we can
& intend to make the cultivation of Evergreens our main
business. We have now about 150 000 transplanted
Evergreens have but a few thousnd in this country & about
100 000 in Europe for spring planting & shall put out a good
lot of small trees from our native hills & a lot of Evergreen
seed. In short we intend to have a ful assortment of
Evergreens & as our climate & soil are so well adapted to
their growth we hope to raise as good trees as any body & will
endeavor to deal upon as fair terms.
Your offer for exchanging is very fair but we shall not
want to exchange anything this season tho' we have made some
exchanges & may want to exchange with you some hereafter.
We have a business connection with the F K Phoenix of Blooming-
ton Ill & if he should want any thing of you at any time we
would send you trees from here in exchange.
We will send you samples of all the trees you want except
the Magnolia Ae[?] - -a which are all [ltr crsd out]sold out. But our
Arbor Vitae & Con[?]-on Spruce--Black & white -- are but one year
transplanted. We expect to have a fine stock for sale next
