La Moille, Oct. 31st 1856.

Dear Friend Kennicott -

Yours of 23rd inst. came to hand this evening. - I had sent you a couple of hurried scrawls for the "Farmer" in the morning. It pains me that my time is so fully occupied that I am unable to write any but business letters.

This comes from being entirely disappointed in promised funds from my quondam partner - (having enlarge business in anticipa= =tion thereof) and tardy collections from last spring's customers.

My partner was Sumner Rhoades, lately advertised (Rhoades & Ray) in Horticulturist. - he has since bought Mr. Ray's interest in the Lyons Nursery.

Do not think from the above that we are destitute[underlined]; but it keeps me busy[underlined] to meet my engagements.

I sympathized deeply with you in your physical sufferings, and rejoice that you are once more restored to your wonted buoyancy.

Did you order some plants of me last spring? - if so the letter must have come when I was on my visit to Cin'l and Nashville in March, and was not handed me with other correspondence on my return.

My price for 1000 of Necked Pine to dealers is $3. can put you 10,000 at $20. or 5000 at 250/100 per M. can furnish millions of them -

1000 M'c Avoy's Superior for $8. - can spare by the hundred,

Jenny's Seedling, Walker's " Crimson Cone, at Eastern prices.

Two large orders under negotiation will take what currants I wish to wholesale, - can retail all of our Gooseberries.

There is a balance of $4 66/100. due you - have been waiting to finish collections to remit - but will send it, or carry the amount to your credit towards your order if you send one.

Did you have your Smoke=house apple of me? if so, it is the Monarch, a splendid[underlined] September fruit which you have seen at our meetings of N.W.F.G.A.

I had it from Dr. Pen= =nington as Mountain Pippin, afterwards corrected by him to Smokehouse, but Monarch is the true name.

Your estimate of Cahoon's seedling Rhubarb has been fully corroborated by my own experience - I believe it of no value for most localities on the prairies. - the roots are very liable to rot. Mr. Cahoon's location and soil are peculiarly adapted to its successful culture.
