Rockford Dec 2nd, 61

Mr Kenikot
Dear Sir; Can you furnish me the following list of trees & vines & at what price?
Pears 50 trees 2 best varieties
Cherryes 12 " " " "
Evergreens 2 4,1 1/2, 2 feet high 4 " " " ...
Grapes. 24 Vines 3 " " "
I think you can judge what kinds is best adopted to this locality better than myself. I would like several hundred grape vines but cannot afford it, unless they can be had at notes much less than I expect. My vacation is in the grove due west of the fair grounds & about the highest in Rockford.
I have no faith in in dwarf trees, they are not illegible [scratched out] illegible.
Must have young, thrifty trees not over 2 years from graft. Respectfully,
Garner Hinkles

The last sentence has "not natureal" crossed out, and at the end written "unatureal"(sic.). I believe this letter is signed by James Hinkley, a resident of Rockford, Illinois in 1861.
