Status: Needs Review

Chicago December 17, 1858

My dear Sir

Yours of Dec. 11 has just been
received. In answer to it I will say that
I have made no decided effort yet, with
reference to the Botanical Survey. All that
I have spoken to seem to be in favor of it.

Dr. Andrews and I think it would be advisable
to introduce resolutions at the next meeting
of the Academy, requesting a Survey of both Zool-
ogy and Botany made. This I think is the
best plan. I had a conversation with McChesney
a few days ago, he is much in favor of the
Survey. I think the influence which is necessary
to carry the appropriation should be combined,
that is have but one bill and have that include
appropriations for both. I think that the same
amount and even less that you speak of will answer
for a beginning. I suppose Prof Baird will
give me the benefit of his influence in securing the
appoint if approp is made. Write me soon.
Clap a good 130 students. Kind regards to Prof Baird

Yours M Rauch
