White Bear Lake 75 miles west
of St Cloud - Sunday Aug 8th

Dear Father.

Stopping at a shanty built to
hold the claim of a town site on this
beautiful lake - the finest in Minnesota -
I find some men going back to St Peters
and send a line by them to be mailed -

We are jogging along slowly but
surely - will get to Bois de Sioux
in three days - Cavalier will be up
with his train in a week of my
arrival at Bois de Sioux - When I
meet him I will yet have the
opportunity of backing out if I like
but I think Ill go to Pembina –

You may have heard of some
Indian troubles but dont let that
alarm you – I’ll only travel with
strong parties and there is no real
trouble – These Jackass army
officers make a deal or bother about nothing
and then say what trouble they had
etc -

I repeat dont let newspaper
reports trouble you

I ate a sharp tailed grouse for
breakfast – we are living
