My Dear Robert

I am glad you sent the duplicate receipt. I can now get the money. As you requested I will pay the 25 or 30 dollars of outfit here, out of it.

I will make enquiry of Baron Ostensacken about the entomological question and let you know

I He will give you good exchanges for Minnesota things, even though you should not get a great deal. I will see that the University gets plenty in return.

Mr. Norman W. Kittson of St. Paul is our adviser and informant about the red river trip. He says it can be made

by one person for about 200 dollars. Perhaps as the season is rather late you would do as well to put off the Red river journey till next year You might however go to St Paul and thereabouts.

Perhaps as the season is rather late you would make the most of it by going to the West end of Lake Superior, at St. Louis river, and getting on the North shore as much as possible. You would undoubtedly do much there, at comparatively better expense. The north shore in the South ern Boundary of the sub arctic Fauna; You have Reindeer there, and doubtless many of the Arctic Mice; and other Mammals, as also birds &c.

The more I think of it the better I like the plan of going to Lake

[handwritten] Superior for the rest of the season. You can get to your Journeys end in a week at little expense. Go as far west as you can, and if possible to Isle Royale. This is a good spot: Reindeer there also. From Isle Royale you might get a chance of going to the North Shore. Any Arvicola you get there, and probably any small mammals generally will be new. Arctic birds are there. Magpie, three-toed woodpecker &c. The shortest and easiest way to Red River Settlement is by North Shore Lake Superior

Next year we may consider whether it is best to go to Northern Minnesota. or Hudsons Bay! But

I am inclined to think you will find almost every thing at west end of Lake Superior, that is found on same parallel on red river except the fish.

The next Patent office report should embrace the remainder of Mammals, rodents, Insectivores & Carnivores. It will do very well to issue a circular.

I will send the pamphlets Have supplied all you asked to have sent to

It will be very well to put up any number of Mammals, birds & reptiles, however common. All such things will exchange well abroad. Shells also

Midsummer birds are generally in bad condition. If moulting they wont exchange well
