And although the first suggesetion of such a building came to the city of Dallas from the precincts of this Temple, two or three (striken: clo) progressive churches of this city grasped the idea & immediately conceiving the wisdom of it, have anticipated us. Since that day I have (striken: been) taken every opportunity to press the idea, preach of it (striken: & talk _____) in public & talk of it in private until ground was broken & the new building started. Since my first address on the subject conservative Temple Emanu-El has fallen into line, & every new synagogue that is now built contains institutional features, for it has been emphasized (inserted: during) the last 3 or 4 years by every president of the CCAR (striken: until) including this very year as the kind of synagogue that is likely to wield most influence & secure the greatest number of workers. Without reverting to (striken: any) (Inserted: the remaining) specific activities accomplished within and without the Congreation permit me to say (striken: that in all) in all

7 modesty that (striken: I have wielded in influence) (Inserted: I have succeeded in making the Jewish name respected & honored in all walks of life. During (insert: _____ ____ name) my 15 years sojourn in your midst the spoken word in Temple Church (inserted Club) School (Insert: as well as the ____ word) University & on various public platforms in the city & ___________ the State has been recognized (inserted: publically & privately) as a ________ & liberalizing influence. I mention these (inserted: few) facts though seemingly immodest which all of you know too well is contrary to my nature, because I feel that my work among you & my ability deserve (inserted: at least) as much encouragement from my own people as I receive from countless others. At a recent celebration fo the 25th Anniversary of a Rabbi Cabsich (?) of Richmond Va. the President of the Central Conference was invited to be present. In the course of his address on the relations of the Rabbi to the Congregation he said what I would like to (striken: No Congregation) say to you. "No Congregation knows the sacrifices a Rabbi is obligated to make in order to measure up to the highest standard. They are sacrifices of pleasure, leisure, strength & health. Nothing that a constituency can do for its minister to honor him can ever be hoped to repay him for all that he was obligated to do as a worker in the vineyard of the Lord" Through the instrumentality & untiring labor of your minister assisted (inserted: & encouraged) by a few zealous and noble hearted men who have always been read to (inserted: take counsel with me & to) give of their time, their energy & their careful constructive thought _____ to be of service to you, we have cast up & are preparing the way

9 that we create a more glowing impulse, a new zest & a new life in the hearts of each one of you. And through the thrill of this new life that (inserted: I pray will) to be inaugurated in this coming year the stumblingblocks that have hitherto have been a dead weight upon our necks, fostering discouragement. (striken: recently delivered by Louis Marshall of New York City) to Dr. Cyprus Alder "Prof ______________________ Trustees of a new Organizaton established through the philanthropy of Louis Marshall for the promotion of religious education among Jewish girls, he called attention to the appalling fact that 75 per cent of the Jewish Children of school age in New York City are receiving absolutely no religious education. Present conditions are deplorable. Here in America for a Variety of reasons the Synagogue has been virtually abandoned by the younger generation & nothing of a religious nature has taken its place. The Very things that gave distinction to the Jew the religious & moral message that his Bible, his literature and his life conveyed to the world, are spurned & ignored. Belief that the preservation of our noble spritual prestige

10 is indispensible to ________ & to the perpetuation of the most perfect (striken: io at the end of perfect) concepttions of justice, righteousness, purity & human brotherhood. Mr. Marshall have given $150,000 for this educational purpose which he thiks the Synagogue is _________ failing to accomplish. (Striken: The __) If (inserted: it is true) the Synagogue has failed to accomplish the high purpose for which it is manifestly destined (striken: I venture) it is because the stumblingblocks have not ___ been (striken: taken) (inserted: seriously) considered & taken out of the midst of American _____. (Striken: As). In the (inserted: far off) days of the ancient Tabernacle the old & the young with __________ & ____ hearts __________ their services. ____ with each other to ____ ___ spiritual life & create spiritual happiness. Today the burden is placed upon the few & particularly upon the Rabbi & the ___ work day & night (striken: for the best) supply his strength & using up his vitality to realize (inserted: the goal ____) spiritual sucess, the task is too stupendous (inserted: for any one man) to the result (striken: an "s" at the end of result) (striken: are) is consequently failure-but the failure is not the failure of the man but the failure of the synagogue as an institution simply because it has been deaf & headless to the claims of that Institution. If we of T. Emanuael are to succeed & possibly show the way & convince Mr. Marshall
