July 7th
Friday Melinda is very poorly today. The Matron thinks her too weak and delicate for the office of gate keeper. M Mitchell was in the parlor when the Matron (not knowing that the ladies were at prayers), opened the com. door to take a chair & step back quickly express. [expressing] her regret for disturbing them, Mary said "Do you mean to say they pray at News [?] meetings? well I think better of them [inserted] a thousand [underscored] times" The Matron was fetched last night at 10 oclk to Coogee to one of her grand Children who was ill. returned 1/2 past 9 oclk
this morn. [morning].
Mr Hossack did not come so Mr. Roberts held service. The Matron took Elizth. Thompson & Christina to the Bazaar as they were both leaving town shortly.
Sabbath 9th Revd. J Mills preached at 11 oclk [?] Howitt eveng.
Betsy Young would not stay to the service because she had a quarrel with another inmate whom she falsly [falsely] accused of telling the Matron tales of her.
Monday 10th Elizth. Thompson started 3 oclk. she has a good out fit for which she expressed her thankfulness and repeatedly promised that she would do her best to give satisfaction in her situation and also to attend a place of worship regularly. keep her temperance pledge &c.
Teusday [Tuesday].11th A young girl 16 yrs old came from Revd. Moreton stating that she was a fit person for admission to the Refuge, she was put into the Ivy Cottage to wait till the subcom.
met, an inmates petticoat given her to patch & dinner sent her at 1 oclk.
The Ladies sent her back to ask Mr Moreton for note of recommendation but she did not return.
