Dr Mary Clementina DeGaris (16 December 1881 – 18 November 1963) was an Australian medical doctor. During World War I she worked at the Ostrovo Unit in Serbia for the Scottish Women's Hospitals and after the war worked at Geelong Hospital. She was an advocate of antenatal and postnatal care.

It is likely that Miles Franklin met Dr DeGaris in Serbia in 1917-18 when they both worked at the Scottish Women's Hospital Camp in Ostrovo, where Franklin had volunteered as a cook.

The indecipherable reference to the location 'a picture show near' maybe could be Rat Dwellers- a Miles' description of a slum area at that time?
