& tender love I shall ever
know, & I doubt if I shall
ever be light of heart, or glad,
as I was then –––
Ah! dear dead voice, for
ever silent now, how vainly
I yearn for yr sound! My
old life is dead & laid
[crossed out] at rest with you
& I can no more recall
one of its happy hours
when I can hear one echo
of yr burnished tones!
The tender solicitude – the dear
familiar face – the pleasant
voice – the ever loving sympathy –
not one closed door between
his heart & mine.
