I stood looking out & watching
the slow monotous drip
of the rain as it falls
from the heavy clouds – it
is a dull cheerless day a day
that almost blots out all
memory of summer so
dreary & colourless are
sky & earth

I felt that utter weariness
of soul wh. made the shortest
winter day too long
----------------
Alone & helpless in a strange
country – I have made no friend
in all these years – we were
all the world to each other &
he was the dear light & guide
