Revd Sir/

Mr James Hassall having been
kind enough to acquaint me of a communication
that you have recd from J. [Stout?] Esqr relative
to an altercation that has taken place between
him & me - I beg leave to submit to your
consideration the circumstances from whence it
originated. -

On monday the 22nd Ultimo I was informed by
[Ragham?] (the [infantry man?]) that Mr [Stout?] told
him he intended to send the two Shepherds
at the Junction Station into Bathurst on Friday
the 26th Septr for an assault on one of Mr Cox's
Shepherds; accordingly I provided men to take
charge of the flocks during their absence. -

On Thursday the 25th I recd an official notice
from Mr [Evanden?] the superintendant of police
requiring me to send in a man from the Junction
Station on Tuesday the 30th Septr to answer a
charge of assault on one of Mr Cox's Shepherds
I of course imagined that Mr [Evanden's?] & Mr [Stouts?]
notice refered to the same transaction as the
defendants and the complainants were designated alike
on both charges. - with this difference that Mr
complained of his men & Mr E. of me but I
reasonably supposed that the charge would only be
established against me & that [indecipherable] was [indecipherable] against
the other - Under this impression I thought it
unnecessary
