better than the Joinery & house carpenter business as he is already handy in the use of tools & would be likelyto acquire a knowledge of it soon, and also as it is a trade that would render him capa ble of being more useful to himself and others should he ever be qualified for & included to engage in missionary work. These my ? & sentiments respecting this matter I have stated to Mr. Marsden, expressing my earnest desire that he might, if practicable, be put to learn that business to that good man Mr Smith who has lately come to the colony, & with whom I understand your brother Jonathan & Wm Hocking are learning it. I am not acquainted with the expense that would attend such a step; but I am inclined to think that Mr. Smith, being a pious man, has I under stand, a friend to missions, would be likely to take him upon moderate terms. It is high time for Saml to turn his attention to some calling by which he may get a living, he growing a great boy being now as tall as myself. He seems himself at preent inclined to think it would be better for him to learn a trade whatever he might do afterwards.

perhaps a good deal will depend on how he may feel himself affected to the Sea after the voyage he is now about ot take. I double not but you will give him the best advice you can, and render him any kind offices. I had almost forgot to acknowoledge the receipt of your kind & very gratifying letter by Mr. Crook. The Active arrived the 8th of May with Mr. C. & family, & my Brother-in-law James Shepard in good health. The latter is grown surprisingly I need not say his arrival gave us much pleasure; but we shall soon feel pain in parting with him as he is to return to the colony, it not answering for him to remain here. In short I think he came upon a very very simple errand. I wrote you fully by the Trial Mr. Burnett. The state of the Islands & mission etc is much the same as then: But I have to inform you that the widow Scott was married to Mr. G. Bicknell on the 4th of June. Our Church was crowed upon the occasion by persons of all ranks, among whom was the King, who took his station by me, and displayed an air of majesty & much solemnity during the performance of the Solemn rite, and afterwards, with the Queen partook with us of the wedding dinner. With my affectionate respects to your Father, Mother & all the family, & hearty prayers for you & their welfare both in a temporal & spiritual sense. I hasten to subscribe myself, very affectionately & sincerely yours, W. Henry

I am glad to learn that your time is so usefully taken up. I received by Mr. Crook several letters from Sally in which she speaks of the kindness of your family to her and of your mothers giving her much good advice; for which I feel very thankful. Tho' her letters give me much pleasure, they also give me much pain, as I discover in them much slight & contempt of my dear & worthy partner. It appears she has been accused? to Sally of bad behaviour to the children, which is most false. Poor thing her mind has been much hurt by ? letters. ? conduct to the children ? what it has been represented to her

PS 13th The Queen Charlotte arrived here the 11th inst. and James Shepherd takes a passage on her, and poor Saml is left to go by himself in the Active. He sailed today in that vessel for the Leeward Islands, but we expect she will return here again before she sails for the colony. I am glad James is likely to be soon in the ? by going in the Q. Charlotte, though I am sorry on Saml's account they are not to go together. James can give you all the information and news you can wish

Very Dear Friend, Although I have but lately & written to you by my Brother in law who took a passage in the Q. Charlotte; and tho' Saml's going in the Active supersedes the necessity of my now writing to you by way of giving you news - and tho I am hurried, yet I cannot concern it concistant with the friendship that sub sists between us to omit writing tho' my letter be ever so short. Having fully stated to you in my letter by James Shepherd, (which I hope has reached you by this time) my object in sending Sam' to the Colony, and views and wishes respecting him, I need not here repeat them. I shall only observe that I shall be very thankful if it will answer for him to be put to learn his business

to that good man Mr Smith: and I think he himself would prefer that to the sea. Was he to keep to the sea and act prudently & carefully I think he would be likely to get on faster, and make more for himself in a a temporal point of view; but I feel quite averse to his taking to the Sea from the reasons I have stated in my last to you: and I think the other step would be likely to prove more for his real interest in the end. However I fear the expence attending that step will be greater than I on my own private account will be able to meet; but indeed I think the Missionary Society should contribute, at least in part, to the defraying of such expence: From the account I have had of Mr Smith & the character he sustains I am much inclined to think he would be willing to take him on as moderate & reasonable terms as possible. I trust the Lord, to whose provides the care guidance & protection I commit & commend him, will direct his way, and dispose of him in his all wise Providence as may be most for his real good. I doubt not but you will be ready on all occasions to give him the best advice you are capable of, and render him any kind offices in your power. He is steady, & I hope

[292] will attend to the advice of his friends; and that he will not neglect the means of grace. I am glad you have got a turn of mind for Sunday School keeping etc; it is some thing a kin to missionary work. Indeed I think you seem to being to imbibe something of a missionary spirit. May the Lord abundantly increase it! Perhaps you may yet see it yourduy to engage in missionary work. I double not but your good Father dedicated you to it in your infancy; but where am I going? Please to give my Christian love to him and your valuable mother and remember me affectionately to your sisters and brothers. Wishing you and them every needful blessing for this world and the next. I remain most sincerely & affectionately yours W Henry Mrs Henry desires her kind love to you all.
