The Humble Petition of
The Revd Thomas Hassall (Clerk)
Most Respectfully Sheweth,
That, in the year 1817,
your Petitioner feeling the want of active pious Ministers
in the Colony of New South Wales, and being recom-
mended by the Clergy to take a Voyage to England
for the purpose of obtaining holy Orders; was Induced
to undertake the same, and procured a free passage in
his Majesty's Brig Kangaroo, with the Promise of his
Excellency Governor Macquarie, that he would forward
his Views as far as possible. ------- The unexpected and
very sudden Death of his dear Father, hastened his
Return to this Colony and prevented his obtaining
the necessary Recommendation from the late Governor
(Macquarie) to His Majesty's principal Secretary of
State for the Colonies, in order to his obtaining an Appointmt [Appointment]
-------- But knowing the want of Clergymen in the Colony,
he did not hesitate to return; -------- feeling assured that
the Government would render every facility for the Moral
and Religious Instruction of the People. -------With
these Expectations your Petitioner was allowed a Passage
in the Convict Ship "Mary" - for which he performed Duty
