part of 1852 since the events which it chronicles
e.g. the forthcomong marriage of Marianne
Hassall to G Hope, and the fatal illness of
John Betts, belong to that period]

My dear James
I am sure you
will be very much surprised
to hear they are to be married
next Tuesday 10th. We are
hurrying because Uncle
Betts is not expected
to live long and we think
it better to have it before
his death. We should
all very much like you
