Dear Tom,

It was good to hear from you again. Also, thank you for the clipping from the Palo Alto paper concerning Ricky and his girl. I haven't heard from him lately but between his girl and the mine sweeper upon which he is stationed, he must be a busy man. He is in luck to be stationed in San Francisco and I believe his job is such that he will be kept there for some time.

I have thought some about your application for a commission. The Army has established a school in government, the purpose of which is to train officers for the army of occupation. With your background and ability, providing you were interested, it would be a fine place for you to become assigned to that part of the Army's work. It might pay to make inquiry into that in San Francisco if you would like to find out more about it.

I heard from [Walaby?] a week ago. He is anticipating being put on the job of testing the flying fortresses as they are turned out from the plants. That would certainly be a responsible position and shows his flying to be of the best. He is a bad correspondent and I only hear from him at long intervals. It seems all of his old girls are getting married.

It is getting colder here in New York and we are all shivering in tehse flimsy wooden barracks in which we work. The War Dept. states [no?] heat until October 15!

My very best regards Philip
