John H. Watrous Jr.

Headquarters Co. 4th Army, Presidio of San Francisco Sept 21 - 1942

Dear Tom -

Thanks for your note of the 20th. I am sure I can speak for the Army when I say that we all had a swell time the other night with you. We did some pretty good drinking, considering the fact that I am not in the shape I was a year ago. Let's hope it's the first of many meetings.

I certainly hope you hear something favorable from the Army. This new school you sent me the clipping about should be worth your while in investigating, in the event your other deals do not work out the way you want them to.

The Brigman episode is not too sensational. It merely involved her "fighting for it" and meeting rebuffs.

Lew and stayed there all of Sunday, getting back today. They have a very nice home there - ideal for Carmel as it is relatively near. He has hinted that he has data - mostly photographs - he bought in France in 1938, in Fresno. I am checking this lead and will try to develop it for them.

I will be glad to see Bruce Jessup. He did all he could, I know, and I appreciate his help very much. That scoff blow off finished things up for anyone trying to get waivers or any special consideration, no matter how worthy the case. The Army provides faster promotion and a better deal in the long run, provided you get yourself initially situated in a pleasant place. Ft. Ord looked terrible - the 2nd lieutenants looked around 18-20 down there. I was rather depressing to sit in the bar at the Del Monte and see the gold + silver bars. But perhaps they will come to me in the future!

Every good wish - Josh -
