capacity of about 3 million gallons of wine - some in old wood barrels
(about 2000 gallons each), most in huge steel vessels or even in concrete rooms
with specially treated walls. From the Kellerei we went to the grammar school
where the program began with coffee and delicious cakes - fruit cakes + sweet
cakes - accompanied by candle light and singing by children of this age group.
Then with our stomaches slightly coated and our hearts warmed by a few
speeches from dignitaries (the mayor, director of the Kellerei, Dr. Boerner) came
at last the feature of the day - the wine testing! We sampled in about
1/2 hour a glass each (at least and more if they could talk you into it)
of 7 different and excellent (to my innocent taste and everyones agreement)
Remstal wines - 4 red and 3 white wines. Then all slighly high we
walked in the rain back to the Burg, where upon I wrote to Anna a letter
which in later years we may often enjoy laughing over - not to be repeated
here because I'm not in the proper "spirits."

Yesterday morning several of us went together to the Evangelische
church service. It was a simple service - hymn, Bible reading and
prayer, hymn, sermon, hymn, prayer, hymn, anouncements. No
choir, and no collection (leave your offering in a little box by the door
on the way out). I was quite encouraged because I understood
enough of the German to get pretty much of the idea of the sermon.
But all this optimism was sort of squelched last night when we
went to a movie down in Beutelsbach (a remake of a British film -
The Tiger from....someplace in India - in technicolor, about 6-8 years
old). I caught only a little of the German and could get almost no idea
of the plot from the occasional words or sentences I did catch. Patience,
I guess.

Today was of course the first day of classes - mostly organizational
matters. Both Anthropology and Music are being adjusted quite
well to the German setting (especially anthro. which amounts to
a study of German culture patterns and especially the Remstal
culture). I'm also participating in the chorus and it looks like
lots of fun to come. But since it's now 11pm I've got to start
studying for today. Hope you can read the other page. If there's
difficulty in photostating, let me know and I'll write on only one side.
Love, George
