George E. GrayGeorge Edward Gray (1818-1913) was appointed Chief Engineer of the New York Central Railroad in 1853. In 1865 he came to California as Consulting Engineer for the Central Pacific Railroad and then was appointed Chief Engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Gray developed techniques for erecting iron railroad bridges that made them both strong and durable. In 1885 Leland Stanford named Gray as one of the initial members of the Stanford University Board of Trustees on which he served until his death.
