James Carolan (1828-1912) was born in Ireland and immigrated to New England in 1938. In 1849 he came to Sacramento to work in the mines but soon tired of that and opened a general store in 1852. In 1875 Carolan moved to San Francisco and acquired a hardware business that became known as Carolan & Co., importers and jobbers in iron, steel and hardware. He retired in 1893.
