Ruins of San Francisco April 24 - 1906.
Dear Mother & Sisters Just a few lines to let you know that I am faring very well under the circumstances. I have been down town to day and took in the sights & it is terrible the people are all afraid to stay here & over 250000 have left the town. Everything

is martial law the military has charge of everything. We have plenty to eat at present the supply trains are coming in very fast & everything to assist the suffering people, but nobody has a home nor there is not a chimney left on a single house in S.F. everybody is cooking in the streets & there is no hospitals left for the sick they are all in tents

watch-dog. The thieving and pillaging is something terrible & the troops have shot and killed lots of crooks.
There was a nigger went up to a lady today and tore an earing out of her ear & he was shot dead. Oh I am glad that you people are not out here & I hope you will never have

I am still on the beach & I intend to stay here. I lost everything (which was not much) & I intend to make money. I could have went to work today for $3 a day and board but I am looking for something better. How is things around Freeport? I am stopping out here on the beach still. I have got a room with a friend of mine and we are very comfortable

We have had a lot of small shocks today but they dont amount to much except they shake a little plaster down once in a while. The women are going plumb loco it seems to me. They won't go back in their houses and a good many have went out of their head. The family I am stopping with are very fine people.

I am helping Mrs. Root do the cooking & I am the kitchen canary in general. I intend to go to work about the first of the week for $5 a day and board.
I found a fine bulldog today and I brought him home with me tonight and I wish you had him. I would not part with him for $100. He is educated & a fine
